Bridget, a very interesting article! Is the plight of the millions of people who live so far from the beach solved?? In Australia I grew up less than 5 minutes from the beach (and if I know my stats right, 90% of Australians live less than an hour's drive from the beach!) so I'm now finding it hard to survive this hot summer right in the middle of Europe! I still don't think any of these things are as good an experience as a real beach, but if you use your imagination well perhaps it's a reasonable substitute. And better than a day-long drive, too. Enjoy your summer!» gidgelux - Is a landlocked beach a beach ..?!

OK, that's probably a bit exaggerated but I'm in southern Germany (Heilbronn - north of Stuttgart) at the moment, after a stint in Bratislava (equally landlocked). Ah, that's life ... no beaches but at least there are plenty of old castles, cathedrals and cobblestone streets.
