Bridget, a very interesting article! Is the plight of the millions of people who live so far from the beach solved?? In Australia I grew up less than 5 minutes from the beach (and if I know my stats right, 90% of Australians live less than an hour's drive from the beach!) so I'm now finding it hard to survive this hot summer right in the middle of Europe! I still don't think any of these things are as good an experience as a real beach, but if you use your imagination well perhaps it's a reasonable substitute. And better than a day-long drive, too. Enjoy your summer!

Hi Amanda! Yes, I agree that the man-made beaches aren't as good as the real deal, but it's better than nothing. I happen to be living in Nice (although I'm currently in land-locked, but river-filled Idaho) and live about 30 yards from the "beach." If you've been to Nice, you'll understand the quotes around beach. Where are you based in Europe? Ciao, Bridget.

Where in Europe: well, try and imagine the spot where you could be the furthest from the beach in every direction, and you'd find me. OK, that's probably a bit exaggerated but I'm in southern Germany (Heilbronn - north of Stuttgart) at the moment, after a stint in Bratislava (equally landlocked). Ah, that's life ... no beaches but at least there are plenty of old castles, cathedrals and cobblestone streets.
