When planning a vacation overseas, there are some steps to take, some necessary while others essential, to get the most out of the time spent before the fun begins.

Having met many interesting people and visited many exciting places as a world traveler, some people might ask themselves what they could have done differently to maximize their time spent before and during the trip. Here are some basic survival tips to consider.

Packing Luggage for Your Overseas Trip

First, it is important to plan ahead weeks if not months before the scheduled departure time. Including a packing list of items vacationers plan to bring along with them and crossing off the items while packing luggage is a useful tip to help remember what to bring. Remember there will be thousands of miles that separate world travelers from their homes so there is no turning back to get even the smallest thing left behind.

Planning Your Overseas Trip

Next, having an itinerary printed out of the places one plans to go and the things one plans to do is helpful when getting to the exotic destination. When needing to get tickets to some venues, try to purchase them online ahead of time that way it avoids the often crowded lines. The hotel clerk can also offer suggestions on what to do and often arrange tickets and even transportation.

For instance, when visiting Paris, the hotel staff can arrange tickets, transportation and guides to The Louvre Museum and to Versailles. Not only can the staff be helpful in arranging these side excursions, they will have no difficulty in the language when talking with the local tour operators.

Do not forget about bringing money. Any plans on purchasing anything overseas, the smart thing to do is to exchange American money with the currency of the host country. Using a credit card is also a good idea if one is strapped for cash. Just remember to let the bank know so it can be aware of the credit card holder's plans of using it overseas or they may put a hold on its use as a precautionary measure. Having a credit card is also useful in the unfortunate event one loses his or her traveler’s checks or foreign currency is ever stolen.

Registering and Having the Proper Documents for Overseas Travel

Another idea is to inform the American Embassy of each country vacationers visit the details of their travel arrangements particularly of the time and location of their stays. Registration at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate is a guarantee that they will contact American travelers in the event of an emergency such as civil unrest or natural disaster. The embassy will be able to assist their compatriots with evacuations and extractions to safe havens.

Finally, after all the preparation, planning, and money exchanging, without a valid passport the world traveler doesn't get in to most foreign countries. Some countries will allow a foreign traveler to enter their borders with only a birth certificate, or with a birth certificate and a driver’s license, but without a passport, a world traveler definitely will not be able to reenter the United States, due to the U.S. Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004.
